Learjet 75 Aircraft Set for World Debut at EBACE 2013


MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(Marketwired - May 10, 2013) -

Bombardier Aerospace announced today that just one year after launching the Learjet 70 and Learjet 75 aircraft, it is returning to this year's edition of EBACE with the first production Learjet 75 jet. Alongside the debutante will be three additional class-leading jets.

The Challenger 300, Challenger 605 and Global 6000 aircraft will all be on display from May 21 - May 23, 2013 in Geneva, Switzerland at the 13th European Business Aviation Conference and Exhibition.

Growing Support Network to Put Customers First

Bombardier Customer Services team members will be on hand to highlight the continuing growth of its comprehensive support network. Within the past year, the team has converted its Frankfurt parts depot to a full-service hub to accommodate a wider range of parts transactions, opened a business aircraft-focused Regional Support Office in Farnborough, U.K. and continued to drive greater volume and capabilities at its wholly owned Service Centre in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Learjet 75 aircraft: The Learjet 75 jet features the pioneering Bombardier Vision Flight Deck with an interior influenced from its bigger stablemate, the Learjet 85 aircraft. This jet will soar above the traffic with a maximum altitude of 51,000 ft (15,545 m) and is capable of flying more than 2,000nm (3,704km)(i) between Geneva and Cairo non-stop(i).

Cessna Introduces A New Citation Sovereign

New Avionics, New Engines In The Latest Of The Line

Cessna has introduced the latest variant of its Citation Sovereign line at the NBAA convention in Orlando, and announced that the "Citation X" will live on.

“This year, we are thrilled with the steps we have taken to deliver what our customers want and need,” said Scott Ernest, Cessna President and CEO. “These innovations further underscore our commitment to bring cutting edge aircraft and service to market for today and tomorrow and to exceed our customers’ expectations year after year.”

The New Citation Sovereign now delivers increased range, updated technologies and enhanced capabilities. Features of the airplane, currently on display at NBAA include:

  • New cockpit with Garmin G5000 avionics suite
  • Increased range by 150 nm, boosting the New Citation Sovereign total range to over 3,000 nm
  • Powered by the new Pratt & Whitney Canada PW306D engine
  • New cabin amenities including the integrated Cessna Clarity cabin management system, in addition to improved seat design
  • Improved short runway performance
  • Integrated automatic throttles
  • Winglets have been added, giving the aircraft a distinct appearance and an aerodynamic boost
  • Improved ground cooling performance

Line flow has already started on the New Citation Sovereign, and entry into service is expected in the early third quarter of 2013. The new Sovereign will also be available with a utility configuration, with options to carry payload, people, or both, depending on the mission requirements.

Meanwhile the Citation X name will live on. When the plans were drawn to improve on the Citation X systems and performance, that aircraft was to be called the “Citation TEN”. Through the design and certification process, the Citation TEN has claimed the title of world’s fastest business jet, but customers have told Cessna that they prefer the new aircraft retain the Citation X name.

“You can see customer input present throughout the entire process,” said Roxanne Bernstein, senior vice president of Marketing. “We’ve implemented customer input with various designs, we value customer feedback with services, and we also listen to the customer when it comes to guidance with naming our aircraft. Customers value the performance and system improvements with the updated aircraft, the fact that the new Citation X is the world’s fastest business jet with a top speed of Mach 0.935, and they value the original name. So Cessna has decided that, moving forward, this aircraft will be called the new Citation X.”

Cessna also reinforced the company’s activities tied to the smart global growth strategy including opening Citation Service Centers in the United Kingdom and Spain. The company announced the first Cessna-owned Citation Service Center in the UK, located at Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield. The newly-acquired 50,000-square-foot facility, rebranded as the Doncaster Citation Service Centre, offers a wide range of services to Citation customers, from maintenance to modernization and paint. Previously known as Kinch Aviation Services, the business has operated for 15 years and been a Cessna authorized service facility for the past four years.

Cessna highlighted the grand opening of its new regional Citation Service Center in Valencia, Spain. The 100,400-square foot (9,328-square meter), state-of-the-art facility is located at Valencia Airport (ICAO: LEVC) in eastern Spain, convenient for Citation customers across Western Europe and North Africa. The Center offers a one-stop shop for comprehensive repair, completion, fulfillment, maintenance and customization services.

In addition to Cessna’s extensive U.S. based network, Cessna now operates four Citation Service Centers in Europe, with Valencia and Doncaster complementing facilities in Paris, France, and Prague, Czech Republic.

Embraer Executive Jets Debuts Legacy 450 Mockup At NBAA

Attendees To Get First Up-Close Look At The New Airplane Design

Embraer Executive Jets will display a complete Legacy 450 cabin and cockpit for the first time at the NBAA Convention in Orlando, FL, next week. While the mockup will be at Embraer Executive Jet’s booth at the convention center, the Company’s entire portfolio of in-production business aircraft will be at the static display at Orlando Executive Airport. A public unveiling of the mockup will be held at 10 am at the company’s booth on October 30.

“NBAA is an important show for Embraer Executive Jets which is why we chose to debut the Legacy 450 mockup to emphasize its role as a revolutionary business aircraft,” said Ernest Edwards, President, Embraer Executive Jets. “The Legacy 450 is the only mid-light aircraft with fly-by-wire technology and a six-foot, stand-up cabin with a flat floor. Our participation at NBAA is designed to reflect the advances our aircraft bring to the business aviation market. The fact that this year’s NBAA is in our home state allows us not only to show off our aircraft but our Customer Center and headquarters in nearby Melbourne.”

Boeing 787 Engine Failure Sparks Fire at Charleston Airport

Another Boeing 787 engine problem—this time involving a General Electric GEnx turbofan in an airplane destined for Air India—sparked a grass fire at Charleston International Airport during a pre-flight test on Saturday, forcing the airport to close its main runway for more than an hour. The contained engine failure has prompted an investigation by the NTSB, Boeing and GE, maker of the engine now in service with Japan Airlines on four 787s.

Evidence so far points to a failure in the “back end” of the engine, specifically in the area of the low-pressure turbine. “GE Aviation continues to work with the NTSB and Boeing to determine the cause of Saturday’s incident during a ground-test run in Charleston on a newly built 787,” said the engine company in a statement sent to AIN. “GE is working aggressively to move the engine involved in the incident to a GE facility for an investigative tear-down.”

The incident involved the second of three 787s that have rolled off Boeing’s new assembly line in Charleston, South Carolina. It came roughly a week after Japan’s All Nippon Airways had to ground its five Rolls-Royce Trent 1000-powered 787s following the manufacturer’s discovery of corrosion in a crown gear within an external gearbox during product development testing.

ANA has since returned four of its five airplanes to service, and plans to redeploy the fifth early this week.

Keep Those Older Business Jets Flying

EAA AirVenture 2012 has just wrapped up. If you were fortunate to have gone this year (sorry to say I was not), and I asked if you saw any antique airplanes, you might mention seeing a Waco, a DC3 or Ford Tri-Motor. But what about a Learjet 35A, Citation II or Hawker 700? Early serial numbers of these venerable business jets are well into their golden years as they all were in production during the late 1970s. These and many other business jets are well past age 30.

In our aircraft cost databases, we assume that all the business aircraft are maintained more or less the same way with new parts replacing old, worn out parts. As many operators of long-out-of-production aircraft are finding out, this is not the most cost effective way to keep these aircraft flying.

First off, availability of new parts for older aircraft is becoming harder to find. Some non-OEM vendors are no longer in business, or they have been acquired and merged into different entities. They do not keep production lines open year round or may only build spares as needed.

Overhauling of serviceable components is also getting harder to accomplish. Sure, you can overhaul a generator multiple times, but what about the holes for the mounting bolts? Over time, you can only use "oversize" bolts so often before the component case is no longer serviceable.

To say that avionics have evolved since the mode 1970s is an understatement! Many of these older aircraft use what we euphemistically call steam gages. And relative to today’s technology, that statement is not too far off. Repairing these older instruments is becoming more costly, as are replacements. Glass cockpit upgrades are available, but at what cost?

Perhaps the toughest choices come with the engines. The first and second-generation business jet engines are all into their second, third or fourth overhaul cycle. Guaranteed engine maintenance program rates reflect this with rates much higher than current generation engines. The cost to overhaul a pair of these engines can run to more than the cost of the aircraft itself. Even with fresh engines, a 35-year old business jet will not double in selling price.

Look at the very popular Citation II. According to the Aircraft Bluebook Price Digest (Summer 2012), the selling price of a 1978 Citation II is $650,000. The basic overhaul price is about $350,000 per engine. Add in some cycle-limited items like rotor disks and impellers and the price jumps to over $500,000 – each!

Overhaul a pair of run-out engines on your 35-year old business jet and you will be lucky to get 50% back if you sell it. There are just too many of theses aircraft available for sale and at very low prices.

I have talked with more than one operator of aircraft like these who will not, and cannot, pay for an engine overhaul. Instead they look for a similar model year aircraft with engines in good condition with maybe 1,500 hours remaining until overhaul. They buy the second airplane, swap engines and part the rest out. This recycling method is more cost effective for many of these older business jets.

I doubt values on these “vintage” jets will ever recover. So it looks like we will see a steady dwindling of whole aircraft as we see two aircraft make one flyable aircraft and so on. Keeping these older business jets flying is becoming more of an exercise of scrounging and cannibalizing versus one of replacing/overhauling.

Maintaining older aircraft in this manner requires time, and decreases the aircraft availability. You need to have two or three aircraft to keep one in flyable condition! It can be done, but it is better suited to a flier that can live with low utilization and decreased availability. So enjoy these aircraft now, because it won't be to many more years at Oshkosh before a Learjet 35 is parked next to the Staggerwing!
