The Importance of WAAS/LPV

Don’t Let Less Than Ideal Conditions Ruin Your Approach

Sometimes, one experience can change your entire perspective on flying. A few years ago, a Hawker 800 pilot relayed a story to me about WAAS LPV. The pilot had been requesting WAAS/LPV in their aircraft but had been denied his request because the aircraft owner saw it as a high cost with very little value. One business trip from Nashville to St. Louis changed the value seen in LPV.

The aircraft owners were flying in for a very important business meeting and planned to land at Lambert Field but the ILS was down and there was a very low ceiling. This forced the aircraft to divert to an airport many miles away. Meanwhile, the owner witnessed a Cirrus land right after their missed approach.

Because it was an unplanned arrival at a very small FBO, they had to wait for a car to become available and drive nearly an hour out of their way, missing their meeting. Needless to say, the owner was very upset that his mid-sized jet could not get into an airport while he witnessed a small piston aircraft land with ease. The owner scheduled a WAAS LPV system installation the following day.

WAAS (wide area augmentation system) and LPV (localizer performance with vertical guidance) is a system that uses satellites and ground-based radio systems to enhance GPS signals for the entire flight path of the aircraft, including approaches that can get you down to 200 feet. From an approach standpoint, the FAA’s most recent update (November 15, 2012) shows LPV approaches at 1,519 airports including 1,307 LPV’s to non-ILS airports. This flexibility can get you closer where you want to go.

Other benefits include cutting distances between airports, saving time and fuel because the aircraft does not have to follow routes based on ground based systems alone. It also allows safer flight at low altitudes because older system equipment is often blocked by terrain or elevation changes. Simply put, WAAS will get you to where you want to go faster, safer, and often times with less fuel.

Eurocopter Announces Projected Performance Figures For The Medium Twin Helo

Eurocopter has conducted the first flight of its no. 1 series-production EC175, and confirmed the performance of this next-generation multi-role helicopter. The maiden flight occurred last week at Eurocopter’s Marignane, France headquarters facility, with company pilot Augustin Dupuis at the controls.

“With this first production series aircraft now airborne, the EC175 helicopter is a reality, and Eurocopter is very pleased to bring this new product in its civil range to the market,” said Lutz Bertling, Eurocopter’s President & CEO. “This first flight is the occasion to confirm our objective – which was to develop, in cooperation with our industrial Chinese partner, AVIC – the safest and best medium-sized rotorcraft, which also is a leader in terms of competitiveness, power efficiency and comfort. Following the success of Eurocopter’s EC130 T2 and the EC145 T2, the EC175 is yet another example of our strategy to provide outstanding value to customers.”

Eurocopter announced performance figures for the aircraft Wednesday which are better than the helo's original estimates. Its recommended cruise speed is 150 kts. – 10 kts. faster than the previous figure without affecting payload range – while the maximum cruise speed exceeds 165 kts. Eurocopter’s program flight tests to date also have confirmed the EC175’s power performance, including hover out of ground effect (HOGE) at maximum take-off weight at 4,500 ft. at ISA+20°C conditions; excellent one engine inoperative (OEI) hover performance, which ensures safety during hosting for search and rescue missions ; extensive power reserve and heli-deck performance (PC1) at maximum take-off weight in ISA+20°C conditions –available with application of the latest certified version of Pratt & Whitney Canada’s PT6C-67E engines.

The EC175 avionics extends the EC225’s undisputed superiority of in-flight envelope protection, pilot assistance and situational awareness and includes the most innovative alerting and self-monitoring system. “Helionix,” the newest avionics family being certified, meets the latest international avionics standards, and makes the EC175 the second aircraft to apply them – after the Airbus A380.

For these new state-of-the-art standards compliance to be available from the initial helicopters provided to customers, Eurocopter has shifted the EC175’s certification date – while not impacting the first deliveries, which are to begin in September 2013. “Flying the EC175 is a fantastic experience,” said Eurocopter company pilot Dupuis. “The excellent avionics, power, speed and low vibrations levels make it a unique aircraft.”

The first EC175 version to receive airworthiness certification will be for the highly-demanding oil and gas market. With the designed-in attributes that meet rigorous operating conditions for off-shore missions – along with its range and speed – the EC175 is the best choice to address all missions, including search and rescue, emergency medical services, public services, VIP and executive transport.

HyperMach Reconfigures SSBJ Design, Aiming for Mach 4.5

HyperMach Aerospace announced a new configuration for its SonicStar supersonic business jet (SSBJ) that it claims will boost the aircraft’s top speed by about 12 percent to Mach 4.5, while increasing range by 500 nm, to 6,500 nm. At its planned high-Mach cruise speed of Mach 4.4 at FL620, the SonicStar would be able to fly from New York to Dubai in only two hours and eight minutes.

HyperMach has reconfigured the design of its proposed supersonic business jet, SonicStar, with a larger fuselage, new swooped delta wing and redesigned V tail. It has also boosted the output of the aircraft’s in-development H-Magjet 4400 engine to increase the top speed to Mach 4.5.

The updated version–which includes a new swooped delta wing, redesigned V tail and a pair of more powerful engines–is “slightly larger” than when the SonicStar was first announced at the Paris Airshow last year. Thus, it could now accommodate up to 32 passengers, instead of the original 20.

Work is now said to be under way on the SSBJ’s 65,000-pound-thrust H-Magjet 4400 “hybrid turbofan ramjet” engines, which are being developed by Portland, Maine-based sister company SonicBlue. The company says it plans to start engine rig testing next year, followed by core and then electrical compressor tests in subsequent years. A full engine run is scheduled for 2018.

The redesign has pushed estimated first flight one year to the right, to 2022, but HyperMach says it still expects certification and entry into service in 2025. The company will start taking orders for the $180 million SonicStar next month.

Aircraft Makes Its 1st Journey 'On Wheels'

Airbus has successfully completed the main structural assembly and system connection of A350 XWB ‘MSN-001’ – the first flight-test aircraft. The aircraft is shown here on its wheels for the very first time moving out of the main assembly hall (Station 40) at the recently inaugurated “Roger Béteille” A350 XWB Final Assembly Line in Toulouse. It then entered the adjacent indoor ground test station (Station 30).

The assembly work performed in Station 40 included the successful electrical power-on of the aircraft's entire fuselage and wings. Soon work in Station 30 will start by testing the aircraft's hydraulic system, followed by the full electric and hydraulic power-on of the aircraft which will be completed by around the end of the year. This will mark the start of several weeks of comprehensive functional system testing.

After the A350 XWB MSN-001 exits station 30, the aircraft will go through a series of extensive production and certification / development tests, be painted and have its engines installed. It will then be delivered to the flight-line and be readied for its first flight in mid-2013.

Eclipse Aerospace Completes Its First ‘New’ Aircraft

For the first time in more than four years, new aircraft have emerged from the former Eclipse Aviation final-assembly facility in Albuquerque, N.M. Two unfinished airframes left on the assembly line when that company declared bankruptcy in November 2008 were recently completed by the resurrected company, Eclipse Aerospace, and outfitted as factory-new Total Eclipse twinjets. Until now, Eclipse Aerospace’s Total Eclipse airplanes were pre-owned airframes delivered by the old company and later refurbished by Eclipse Aerospace.


For the first time in more than four years, new aircraft have emerged from the former Eclipse Aviation final assembly facility in Albuquerque, N.M.–in this case two Total Eclipse twinjets. These aircraft will soon be followed by new Eclipse 550s, which will start rolling off the line in mid-2013.

Both of the new aircraft–S/Ns 261 and 262–are available for delivery next month equipped with new Pratt & Whitney Canada PW610F turbofans, known-icing certification and the Avio IFMS avionics suite, according to the company. The aircraft will also feature discounted pricing on an optional upgrade package that, upon FAA certification, will include synthetic- and enhanced-vision capabilities, as well as autothrottles.

A company spokesman told AIN the aircraft are the first two examples to pass down Eclipse Aerospace’s retooled production line for the upcoming Eclipse 550, which will be the first aircraft completely produced by the company. Eclipse 550 deliveries are expected to begin in the middle of next year.
