Nexcelle Completes the Preliminary Design Review forits Nacelle to Equip GE’s Passport Engines on Bombardier Global 7000 and 8000 Business Jets

The Nexcelle joint venture of GE’s Middle River Aircraft Systems and the Safran group’s Aircelle has completed the Preliminary Design Review for its nacelle on the GE Passport engine, marking a major milestone with the integrated propulsion system that will power the Bombardier* Global 7000* and Global 8000* twin-jet business aircraft.

The successful design review was held at Nexcelle’s Cincinnati, Ohio headquarters, with its results announced today.

“With this milestone, Nexcelle has once again demonstrated the capability to execute on the design and development responsibility for its programs,” said Nexcelle President Huntley Myrie. “Our teams also are well advanced in preparing the manufacturing and assembly infrastructure that will handle the Passport engine nacelle production.”

Nexcelle’s Passport nacelle incorporates the expertise of its Aircelle and Middle River Aircraft Systems parent companies, including their capabilities in composites, acoustic treatment and advanced production techniques.

Main nacelle elements include the inner and outer barrel, manufactured with composite materials for weight reduction; a fan cowl produced with composites for both weight reduction and strength; along with a target-type two-door thrust reverser and fixed aft nozzle, which are built largely with composites in a design chosen for both performance and weight reduction.

Among the advanced production techniques to be applied by Nexcelle is a robotic drilling and fastening installation for the nacelle’s inlet assembly to improve productivity, quality and repeatability. The Passport’s thrust reverser will be built on a moving assembly line, which applies techniques similar to those used in the automotive industry for improved production efficiency.

As part of the production preparations, tooling designs for the Passport nacelle are now being released by Nexcelle.

Aircelle will produce its Passport nacelle components at the company’s facilities in France and Morocco; while Middle River Aircraft Systems’ production activity is to include composite parts manufacturing and assembly in an all-new GE shared facility in the United States, which currently is taking form in Ellisville, Mississippi.

Learjet 85 Jet Gets its Wings

 

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - Nov. 19, 2012) - Bombardier Aerospace announced today that the first wing shipment for its Learjet 85 jet has arrived at the Wichita assembly line and is now in the process of being readied for mating to the fuselage of Flight Test Vehicle one (FTV1).

Alongside the arrival of the first complete Learjet 85 aircraft wing, the fuselage for FTV2 has successfully completed its integrity inspection. Installation of the nose, bulkheads, floor, windshield and door surrounds are scheduled to begin in the coming days. Once complete the main fuselage will be shipped with the aft fuselage to the final assembly line.

Wings for the complete aircraft static test article are expected to arrive from Queretaro by the end of November as preparations for static ground testing continues. Elsewhere, the program is soaring along as all system supplier safety of flight test rigs been commissioned.

TAMARACK’S ACTIVE WINGLETS SCORE HIGH AT NBAA

 

Orlando, FL – Six months ago no one was differentiating Active Winglet from Passive Winglet technology. However Tamarack Aerospace Group has successfully added the terms to our aviation lexicon. Following the introduction of a Cirrus SR-22 with Active Winglets at the AOPA Summit, the innovative engineering company brought a Cessna Citation recently upgraded with Active Winglets to the NBAA convention and found itself in a whirlwind of demonstrations, explanations and numerous meetings with aircraft manufacturers.

“We can’t reveal the results of those meetings or who they were with,” said Nick Guida, CEO of Tamarack, “but we are very optimistic about the future of Active Winglets.”

Tamarack personnel flew from their factory in Sand Point, Idaho to Orlando in their upgraded CitationJet, climbing out of KICT (1,300’ MSL) at gross to 41,000’ in 30 minutes. After refueling in KMGM (241’) they got back up to 41,000’ in 32 minutes. The book calls for 43 minutes and typical time to climb to FL 410 is 55 minutes. Formal flight testing is just getting underway and Tamarack expects to record some significant changes in performance with the added wingspan and Active Winglets. The upgrade adds four feet of wingspan.

Tamarack Aerospace expects to complete their STC program for the Cirrus in early 2013 and is on track to complete the Citation before the end of 2013. They have started taking $10,000 deposits (fully refundable) for Citation orders. The pre-STC price for the Citation is $196,000 and it is expected that installation for the Active Winglets will take approximately 160 hours.

“We expect to make significant inroads with Active Winglets in the coming year, and in a decade we expect they’ll be standard on most high end, fixed wing aircraft,” said Guida. “The benefits of winglets have long been established. The problem with the old fashioned passive systems is that there is a phenomenal weight penalty arising from the additional structure required to offset bending loads. Those loads can exceed design limits. With Active Winglets, which feature Tamarack Active Control Surfaces (TACS), the bending loads don’t develop. They’re almost instantly counter balanced, meaning the heavy structure will be left on the factory floor.”

NRC Flies World's First Civil Jet Powered by 100 Percent Biofuel

Falcon 20 Burns Unblended Replacement Fuel In Test Flight

The National Research Council of Canada (NRC) achieved a major milestone for the aviation industry as it recently flew the first civil jet powered by 100 percent unblended biofuel. This historic flight symbolizes a significant step not only for the aerospace industry, but also towards advancing sustainable sources of renewable energy.

"I have now flown the world's first 100 percent biofuel flight," said Tim Leslie, one of NRC's pilots. "We have been working hard with our partners for many months, and it is most rewarding to see it all come together. It is truly inspiring to take this step towards an eco-friendly future."

"I congratulate the aerospace team at the National Research Council of Canada for achieving today's milestone in aviation history," said the Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State (Science and Technology). "This is a perfect example of how government and industry work together to bridge the gap between Canadian innovation and commercialization. The pure biofuel flowed into the engines of the Falcon 20 - one of NRC's specifically-equipped and the best-suited jet for this challenge - as it flew over Canada's capital. A second aircraft, the NRC’s T-33, outfitted with an array of under-wing sensors, tailed the Falcon in flight and collected valuable information on the emissions generated by the biofuel. Research experts at the National Research Council will analyze this information to better understand the environmental impact of biofuel. Preliminary results are expected to be released in the following weeks.

The biofuel used for this flight was transformed by Applied Research Associates and Chevron Lummus Global using oilseed crops commercialized by Agrisoma Bioscience Inc. This aviation initiative is funded by the Government of Canada's Clean Transportation Initiatives and the Green Aviation Research and Development Network.
